One Giant Leap For Rabbit Welfare? Burgess Ends Sponsorship of Swedish Rabbit Jumping Team

A few weeks ago my article, Rabbit Jumping: Educational Experience or Flying Circus?  focussed on the presence of Burgess Pet Care sponsored Swedish Rabbit Jumping team at UK pet shows. The promise of ‘more rabbits’, and promotion of  entertainment where only specially trained animals flown into the country can perform, made me feel uncomfortable. I asked:

Can ‘Rabbit Show Jumping’ be packaged as rabbit welfare awareness, when rabbit transportation between Sweden and UK could potentially be stressful? Does the public want to see performing animals from overseas at UK pet shows?

It would appear that this uncomfortable feeling was also playing on the minds of Burgess Pet Care, who contacted me through Twitter:

To reiterate that point: ‘Burgess has no plans to bring the rabbits to the UK in the future and will instead focus on highlighting the welfare needs of rabbits, in line with the core beliefs of our business’.

One small step for Burgess, one giant leap for rabbit welfare?

    1. Jumping rabbits is very good for their well-being as long as it is done properly. I don’t agree with bringing rabbits to the UK from abroad though
